New Order

Legendary band from Manchester formed by the members of Joy Division after the catharsis of Ian Curtis’ death: Bernard Sumner -guitar, lead singer and synths, Stephen Morris -drums and Peter Hook -bass with the addition of Gillian Gilbert -synths, who joined the trio in 1981.
Joy Division was rearranged as New Order following Ian Curtis’ suicide in 1980 and kept the same post-punk claustrophobic tone of the mother band in their first album ‘Movement’ (1981). The group would only took off with the release of ‘Power Corruption & Lies’ in 1983, a rock and dance music hybrid filled with happier songs. Definitive success arrived shortly afterwards with the single ‘Blue Monday’. During the 80s they recorded three more albums ‘Low-Life’ (1985), ‘Brotherhood’ (1986) and ‘Technique’ (1989).
In 1993 they released ‘Republic’, which contained the single ‘Regret’, the band’s biggest success in the States. The rest of the decade for New Order is watered down by the parallel projects of the four members of the group.
Their latest reunion, minus Peter Hook who left the band in 2007, was in 2011. Sumner, Morris, Gilbert and two members from Bad Lieutenant (Sumner’s parallel project): Phil Cunningham -guitar and synths and Tom Chapman -bass make up the New Order we’ll enjoy at FIB 2012, Benicàssim. The set lists for their latest shows include all of their hits -‘Blue Monday’, ‘Regret’, ‘The Perfect Kiss’, etc, as well as classic songs from Joy Division such as ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’.

The Horrors

The Horrors were created in 2005 but didn’t debut until 2006 with the single ‘Sheena is a Parasite / Jack the Ripper’, sixties garage from head to toe, Screaming Lord such tribute and all. Their fierce completely out of control live performances, with front man Faris Badwan, their wild repertoire, which includes covers of The Sonics, and their bizarre looks, halfway between Lux Interior and Siouxsie had everybody talking when they released their first album, ‘Strange House’, in 2007. It was the kind of garage Rock that had been unheard of for decades in the UK.
Almost seven years later and with three albums under their belt, we can undoubtedly say that the quintet hasn’t stopped searching for its musical personality, pushing its limits beyond their original garage influence. In ‘Primary Colours’ (2009) the group entrusted their sound to the Bristol genius Geoff Barrow from Portishead, taking one step further on their evolutionary path and abandoning garage to swim in more experimental waters. With ‘Skying’ (2011), their latest work, they’ve just confirmed the sonic restlessness obvious in their previous album.

Crystal Castles

Crystal Castles was born in 2003 as producer and multi-gadget player Ethan Kath’s personal project. In 2005 vocalist Alice Glass began to work with Kath, who is from Toronto. The result of this collaboration was ‘Alice Practice’, their first 7 inch single. Following that, other singles appeared until their first album was released in 2008, the homonymous ‘Crystal Castles’. Synthesisers pimped with Atari chips, lo-fi electronics, vintage videogame soundtracks, noise, and Alice’s voice and punk attitude make the 16 tracks included in their debut shine.
2010 saw the birth of their second album which carried the same name as the first and was known as ‘Crystal Castles (II)’. This second work was more diverse and somewhat darker and less immediate than the previous one. It has received unanimous critical praise for the courage and skill of the duo in their treatment and setting of the fourteen tracks that make up the album.

Katy B

Kathleen ‘Katie’ Brien, better known as Katy B was born near London in 1989, she studied at the BRIT school and her career has been guided by the influence of Magnetic Man and given a big impulse thanks to the production of one of the members of this group, Benga, who takes Katy B’s smooth voice and wraps it in layers of wobble bass on the single ‘Katy on a Mission’.
‘Katy on a Mission’ reached number 5 on the UK charts in 2010 and made it clear that Katy B was a rising star, ready to battle for the throne of dance music with the American R’n’B divas.
2011 saw the release of her first album ‘On a mission’, which reached number 2 on British charts a few weeks after it was published. 12 songs, 12 hits, one after the other, from the opening ‘Power on Me’ to ‘Hard to Get’ closing the album.

Example

Elliot John Gleave is Example, a London born MC and singer with three excellent albums under his belt. ‘Playing in the shadows’ is his latest, released in the summer of 2011. His first album, ‘What we made’ (2007) was produced by Mike Skinner -The Streets- and released by the producer’s label, The Beats. ‘Won’t go quietly (2010) is the name of his second album.
In any case, ‘Playing in the shadows’ is the album that has placed him in a sweet spot in the current dance music scene in the UK. It’s music for having fun to with Dubstep and House undertones. The first two singles ‘Changed the way you kiss me’ and ‘Stay Awake’ went straight to number 1 on British charts. Example has worked with high priests of the Dubstep scene such as Nero or Skream and with House players such as Funkagenda.

Spector

On their official webpage, right under the band’s name stands proud the phrase ‘Nothing you Haven’t Seen Before’, and that’s just it; nothing new but something special both for the quality of their songs and the overwhelming energy of their live performances. They sit comfortably between Roxy Music and The Strokes with a dash of the desperate indie epicness of The Walkmen.
From the mike, Frederick MacPherson controls the stray thrusts, sudden halts and raptures of the rest of the band, taking the quintet’s brilliant compositions from one place to another relentlessly. Torrential youthful energy in songs that aspire to be hymns such as ‘Chevy Thunder’. 2012 will see the release of their first album but until then we can enjoy the three singles already available: ‘Never Fade Away’, ‘What You Wanted’ and ‘Grey Shirt and Tie’.

Thee Brandy Hips

Thee Brandy Hips are a band from San Sebastián that has its own label, Young Hipsters Records, registers part of their work under a Creative Commons License and put their first album ‘We Are Love’ (2009) up on their webpage for free. That’s what we call a declaration of principles.
‘Raincoat’, their second work, is as pop if not more than their debut, featuring guitars and flawless tunes with British airs produced by Jon Aguirrezabalaga. The album was recorded the summer of 2011 at ‘El Tigre’ in Bilbao and is mixed by We Are Standard’s Xabier Egia. No more and no less than eleven dazzling pop hits.
